Students

As part of Aviagen’s commitment to Breeding for the Future we proudly support student placements.

We believe in nurturing emerging talent, providing hands-on practical experience and giving opportunities to the next generation of poultry and non-poultry professionals. In doing so, we also gain fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that enhance our business.  These placements have been key to our success, helping us build a dynamic, forward-thinking team and strengthening our connection to the broader community and future workforce. We’ve had success working with students from Harper Adams University, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), and Edinburgh University, who have consistently brought enthusiasm, knowledge, and a strong work ethic to our team.

The Harper Adams British Poultry Council Scholarship

The British Poultry Council Scholarship has been a highly successful initiative for our business, providing a valuable one-year placement to Harper Adams students considering careers in agriculture and food production. For decades, we’ve benefited from this opportunity, which not only offers practical experience but also includes the chance to visit overseas operations, broadening students’ learning and global understanding of the industry. Several of our current colleagues began their careers with us through this programme, highlighting its long-term value in developing skilled, committed professionals within our team.

Edinburgh University Lab Students

We also actively seek summer laboratory placement students from Edinburgh University, offering opportunities for those with relevant experience. These placements provide hands-on, practical learning in a real-world setting, allowing students to apply their skills while gaining valuable industry insight. It’s a great way for students to earn while they learn, and for us to connect with motivated individuals who bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to our lab teams whilst opening them up to future job opportunities.

Testimonials

"I studied Computer Systems and Networks (BEng) at Edinburgh Napier University, but it wasn’t until my student placement with Aviagen that I truly understood how IT operates within a business. University gave me the theory, but Aviagen provided the context, showing me why those concepts mattered and how they applied in the real world. The company supported me by giving me the time and space to learn, while also encouraging me to lean on the expertise of my colleagues. This accelerated my understanding of higher-level IT concepts far beyond what I could gain in the classroom. The experience not only built my technical skills but also gave me the confidence to grow quickly in my career. Today, as an IT Service Desk Analyst at Aviagen, I continue to benefit from the strong foundation that Aviagen and my colleagues helped me develop during that invaluable placement."

IT Service Desk Analyst

"I began working for Aviagen during my first year at Edinburgh Napier University, where I’m now in my third year studying Biomedical Sciences. Balancing work and study has been incredibly rewarding and my time in the Aviagen lab has made university easier, giving me the confidence to apply practical skills directly in my coursework. The experience has also given me a head start in my career, building both knowledge and hands-on expertise in my field. Starting with no lab background, I’ve been supported and trained by an amazing team who helped me grow into a competent technician. What I enjoy most is the constant evolution of the lab as there’s always something new to learn, improve, or adapt to. That dedication to continuous improvement at Aviagen has shaped not only my technical abilities but also my personal approach to self-development."

Aishat
Bacteriology Technician

"I studied Bio-Veterinary Science at Harper Adams University, where I was fortunate to secure a British Poultry Council scholarship sponsored by Aviagen. Coming from a beef and sheep farming background, I was eager to broaden my horizons, and Aviagen provided the perfect opportunity. The financial support was invaluable, but the real impact came from the experience itself, spending time across different teams, even completing a 12-week placement in the USA. I gained not only technical and practical skills but also resilience, confidence, and an understanding of the global poultry industry. My placement opened my eyes to the wide range of careers available and gave me clarity about my own strengths and interests. After graduating, I re-joined Aviagen as a Quality Assurance Assistant. Thanks to my placement, transitioning into a full-time role felt seamless, and I’ve been able to hit the ground running in a career I’m excited to grow."
